Steering Rack Leak V70-XC70 1999

The Steering rack on my 99 XC is leaking,

I Was hoping it was from a loose hose, So i crawled under it today. it looks to me like it's leaking from the boot.

is it possible to put a sealnt or re-boot it or do i need to replace the rack?

(Or better yet, is there a hose that is above the boot that my be leaking and i just didnt look up that high?)

I've attached a picture. The Drips of fluid on the boot is where the leak appears to be comming from.

I'll take any thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks!

You need to replace the rack. It leaks fluid into the rubber boot, and then the fluid leaks out from there. I bought a used one at a junk yard for $100 instead of buying a rebuilt. new is out of the question price wise. you either have a sim or a trw rack. You can tell which kind by looking at your id plate on your car. if the last number is a 4, you have a trw rack. if the last number is a 5 you have a sim rack. I was told both racks are identical physically, so they are interchangeable. I replaced mine with a like kind sim rack for a low mileage collision total vehicle. My indie mech did the job in around 2 hours.

Hi, could it be the leaking pinion upper seal spraying drops all over?
Ihad a leak in there, reduced by seal tendering substance added into power steering fluid.

Looks like you need to replace the rack. It's about an 8 hour job if you do it yourself. Fit an in-line filter in the fluid return line so it soesn't happen again.
