Idle problem on my 2003 V70 5-speed NON-turbo V70-XC70 2003

Any help with the problem will be greatly appreciated...

While approaching a stop with my 2003 V70 5-speed, and once I reach lower than 20Km/h my idle will drop to below 500 rpm or even stall. If the car does not stall then the RPM comes right back to normal once completely stopped.

Now here is curious part to this problem. This problem NEVER happens if I keep my foot on the clutch while slowing down.

I have taken the car to 2 different Volvo dealers and they cannot figure it out.

Please help!!

Thanks,

Joe

Let me get this straight. Approaching a stop, you shift the car to neutral and let the clutch out, but the rpms continue to slow as if the car is still in gear. Once stopped, and if the engine is still running, everything is normal.

You either have a linkage problem, which means you are not moving the stick to neutral. Or you have a transmission problem (dirt), not alowing it to move or disengage the gear.

Try flushing the tranny with new fluid. And investigate your engine/tranny mounts to see if they are broken, causing the linkage to be misaligned.

Thanks for the reply Klaus,

Yes you have it exactly right. As I approach a stop I shift it into neutral and let the clutch out. The idle stays steady at the normal 900-1000 rpm until the car decrease to below about 20Km. Then the idle starts to drop and as soon as I come to a complete stop (if it hasn't stalled which is not often) the RPM shoots right back up to normal and stays there.

If I hold the clutch down while coming to a stop (wheither it is in gear or not) it will never do the above.

I have taken it to 2 different Volvo dealers and they both have no solution for me.

I will look into your suggestion and get back to you.

Joe

It's probably a software problem, I hope! The computer is aware that your car is still moving, but not aware that you are in neutral. I wonder if the newer cars have a gear position switch for manuals? What a good puzzle!
