Looks like the Alternator is on the way out V70-XC70 1998

Well, after 7 years and over 150K miles, looks like my alternator is crapping out. I had to jump start the car Sunday night. After that the car ran fine and started up fine for a few days, and the weather was warm. Now that the weather is cold, the engine turns over a bit more slowly, which got me concerned. I had both the battery and the alternator checked at an alternator shop. The alternator failed the charging test at a little over 12V output.

The shop quoted me $270 parts and labor to replace it with a rebuilt alternator, which they themselves rebuilt. I think the price is reasonable.
I'm probably going to get the work done tomorrow. I could probably do it myself, but its close to the holidays and I don't REALLY feel like doing it and I know the power steering pump has to come off. But my question is this...

How many of you V70 GLT pilots have removed and replaced your own alternators and at what total cost?

How long did it take?

I would wonder about the quality; versus the Bosch rebuilt, which I purchased from FCP Groton for about $215 plus core, right around the lowest I could find.
If you do yourself, make sure you disconnect battery FIRST and reconnect LAST. Manual says to disconnect battery, remove fresh air hose from ECU box, place coolant overflow tank out of the way, remove serpentine belt, tensioner, and power steering pump to get to alternator. I haven't actually changed mine yet, anyone else offer some other tips?
I thought my problem was the power steering pump, because the noise is very similar to the whine heard from low fluid level. But dealer said no, it's the alternator starting to go.

Well, at $270 to have the alternator removed, rebuilt and reinstalled seems like a deal if a rebuilt Bosch unit is $210 plus core. I trust these folks and they've been in business a long time.

For informational purposes only (not pimping their business)here is their website.

"I trust these folks and they've been in business a long time". You left out this part in your initial post!
So if you know they do quality work at a reasonable price and stand behind it, why even consider the hassle of DIY? Sounds like they're right in your back yard.
I've always preferred Bosch because my experience is their stuff lasts one heck of a long time. Have not ever considered local rebuild shops ...

I think what he's saying is that he's getting a bosch because they're taking his out, rebuilding it and putting it back in. Am I mistaken here?

I did mine. It took about 3 hours to do because you have to start at the top of the stack and keep removing components until you get to the alternator. I don't remember how much it cost. I got my rebuilt alternator from from Olympus Auto Parts, which is a good source if you live in the Northern Virginia area.
