Help me buy a New world Volvo XC70 V70-XC70

Hey folks,

My employer wants me to help him find a Volvo. I've owned many but nothing newer than a 1995 940. He has his eyes on an XC70. What should I look for in these? Are there any specific model years to stay away from? What, if any, are the design problems to be aware of on these?

And, can someone explain the AWD system on these? is it always engaged? Does someone know of a good review on this car?

Thanks in Advance,
TN

I was actually thinking of buying an XC70 myself...a used one probably a 2005. I did a lot of research on it. They are definitely quite pricey so depending on your employer's budget you might want to find out how much he/she wants to spend. From my experiences with Volvos, they are good and safe cars but they definitely have their quirks that can be quite expensive to fix. So again, if your employer does not mind the possibility of expensive maintanence on this car than recommend it. Remember, XC70s are AWD which means more parts and gears which translates to higher cost if something goes wrong. I haven't heard much about XC70 breakdowns so that might be a good thing.

As for as AWD...do not confuse it with four wheel drive. AWD feature is not always on so on a standard non-slippery road the car will be on front wheel drive mode. The AWD feature kicks in when the sensors senses a slip on the wheels which will activate the AWD drive to compensate (turning on a sharp turn, snow etc.). I believe the newer models uses the Haldex system in terms of gears and technical aspect for the AWD. So the AWD is ideal when the car is moving on semi-off road pavement. It cannot go on hardcore off roading.

So in summary, if your employer is looking for a safe vehicle and is pretty savvy in taking car of a Volvo then recommend it. If he/she just wants a car that works "perfect" all the time than recommend something else.

    Hope this helps.

You are aware I hope that helping your employer buy an AWD Volvo is a risky career move.

Not a bad point unless the employer is fully aware that Euro-trash cars are not as reliable as Japanese cars, and he wishes, nonetheless, to buy a Euromobile. I never advise people on buying cars, art, shoes, music, and food, for all these products are often taste driven. But if I were in his shoes I would show my employer Consumer Reports on XC70s, and if he were still interested in getting the car, then I would provide him with some advice in this regard.

The only person I ever suggested buy a Volvo was my psychopathic ex-boss in Chicago. An XC70, too. He liked the seats but sadly failed to take the bait.

Most people don't know what they're getting into with a contemporary Eurocar. For people who ask who I like or don't actually hate, I usually recommend Toyotas and Hondas.

If I were your boss I would get an XC70 with DSCT that is MY 2004 or younger.

Go with a '03 or later model. The AWD system changed in this model year to Haldex and is much more robust and prone to less trouble. These XC's just get better and better. I saw your signature, TN? If you are in TN, so am I...in the Knoxville area. Shoot me an email. The AWD system is an always on system but different degrees of power are shifted to the rear wheels in different conditions.
