Timing belt tensioner dampener testing 850 1995

On bay13, it describes compressing what appears to be called the tensioner dampener (from FCP site). It mentions looking for oil leakage as it is compressed.

What I am wondering is, could I replace the tensioner pulley and idler pulley, and leave the dampener in if it appears to be alright? The dam* dampener is $110, and of course I don't want to if I don't have to.

Thanks, Don

Just finished my first belt along with tensioner. The tensioner will ooze fluid as it ages, especially when compresed. I replaced mine, but could not get the pulley off. The T-45 is a shallow screw and just would not bite and began to slip. Fortunately, the pulley is good. Did replace the idler though. Took me a lot longer than it should have just because of that T-45 problem. Believe the recommended if the tensioner should be replaced every 140K miles.

Anyway, when you compress the dampener, watch for the ooze. BTW, $110 is an excellent price.

Hi Dick. Saw your post, and Mark's below (thanks to both of you).

Now a new question. T-45, huh. Always some torx bit creeps in. Guess I need a better set. At least I am hoping to have an extra working car to go and get parts and tools.

Unusual tools required for TB change? I saw on bay13 cs pulley is 30mm. They recommend a couple of swivel joints for 1/4 and 1/2 drive. Anything unusal other than 30mm socket and T-45 torx that you can remember? I hate to get into a job and find I need a tool. Thanks, Don

You know, we've ran that hydro tensioner for a lot of years with little to no trouble at all from it. I have never personally seen one take a dump and destroy a motor, unlike the later mechanical tensioners. That hydro tensioner should be made by Aisin just like all the Jap cars that use that style of tensioner and they appear to have little to no problems with them. It is all too typically Swede, if something works then you had better redesign it but if it is faulty then leave it alone. The general rule of thumb is to replace it every other belt change, every 140K. The official recommendation from Volvo last time I checked was no replacement interval and check for signs of leakage when replacing the belt and replace it at that time. If it was my deal I would go ahead and spend the extra $110.00 if it is your second belt change.

Mark
