Leaking fuel tank (1994) 850 1994

The tank in my 850 is leaking somewhere from teh top. I've noticed it when teh tank is between 3/4 and full, with the leak dripping down the side, somewhere near the filler tube, or above. The car has been in for teh recall, so presumeably, that is not the problem.

I'm planning on dropping the tank this weekend to fix it, and I'd love to have whatever parts are needed on hand, so I can fix it right then, instead of waiting until Monday to go to the dealer (who may likely have to order parts). Is there a "most likely" suspect for this leak, such as the in-tank fuel pump seal?

    Leaking fuel tank (1994) .... Volvo Recall 850 1994

There was a recall for the 94-97 850's for gas tank leakage, just in case you don't find the cause right away. You can call your local Volvo dealer and give them your car's VIN number and they can look in the computer and see if your's has been inspected or replaced. If they find leakage and it's tank related they'll replace the tank free. But then again you may find it's just a hose or loose clamp and be able to fix it yourself.

Sorry about the last "no post".

I was having gas leak every time I filled the tank. Paid someone to drop the tank and replace the vent hose which had broken all the way through.

    Leaking fuel tank (1994) 850 1994

I had the same problem this week after filling up. After pulling both insp plates, I let it sit overnight with a full tank outside of course. The next day the bung for the fuel pump was covered with gas. I dried it up and discovered the epoxy sealant Volvo used around the fuel pump wires had deteriorated and allowed expanding gas to leak up the once sealed wire leads. I cleaned the pit surrounding the wires with acetone on a q-tip and used JB Weld to fill it back in flush with the top. I had to siphon off a gallon or so beforehand so the tank isn't topped off now. I'll find out for sure next time I fill it up.

if you think its coming from the top of the tank then drop the back seats and look under the plastic panel and unbolt the access panels to the pump and sending unit and peek inside.

You might find that the quick connect cables are loose or there is a split in it.

You might also want to inspect the part where the filler tube connects to the tank itself. It might be leaking from the top part of the connection. This can also be done without having to remove the tank.

If you have to .. then unbolting the tank isnt difficult.. its held by 3 bolts and two straps.

Before you drop the tank, just remove the carpet in the trunk and take off the inspection plates. This will let you look for leaks at the sender and fuel pump with a lot less labor. And you won't have to wait for the weekend.
