starting problem

I have a 98 XCV70 w/125k and a new battery. Once a week or so for the last few weeks the car won't start-- dash lights and radio go on but won't start. I pressed in the odometer button based on a brickboard tip and it started up while holding in the odometer button. Dealer couldn't find out whats wrong and had no idea about the odometer trick. Anybody have any clues what could be wrong? Thanks

thanks for the responses. I also LOL about the trip reset button but last week --but unless it was pure coincidence it worked for me on two separate occasions- I know nothing -some tip I got from a brickboard poster about keys and wiping on clothes. I have since found Klaus's funny post about what car dealer asks its customers to wipe their keys on their clothes. I'll try some more today - thanks again for your help.Might the ets or etm issue I have seen posted have anything to do with this starting issue?

      starting problem

Last night the car wouldn't start- I tried shifting the car from P-L 30 times no start-came back this morning started right up -I had taken off the gas cap because of another tip from another thread about intermittent starting. If it started after "resting all night" does that give you any clue. I have no faith in the Volvo dealer and appreciate any help. Thanks to all of you again

    LOL
The odometer reset button has nothing to do with your problem. It is either a bad ignition switch, easily replaced, or the PNP switch. The next time this problem happens, see if you can shift to N when the key is in pos II. If not, and the backup lights do not turn on in R, the PNP sw need to be replaced.
I vote for a new ignition switch.

If you mean the starter does not run and the dash lights do not dim while trying, verify that the ignition switch and PNP switch are in good condition. If either is bad wiggling the key or gear shifter may cause the car to start and you will have identified the problem.

Do you mean the trip reset button? What's the reasoning about this? Maybe if the ign switch or wiring are uncertain you jostled something unrelated to the button when pushing it?

If the starter does not run, runs weakly, or clicks, and the dash lights dim while trying, you should verify the primary wiring (battery, alternator, starter). Even if battery is new something might possibly have been disturbed during installation or testing, or the battery may have a manufacturing defect. I once had a new one with a positive pole that separated from the plates inside the battery and made intermittent contact (though you would see no dash lights if that was true).
