S-70 ENGINE SQUEEL WHEN COLD S70 1998

Every morning I start my car, everything seems fine. As the temp needle starts to climb I hear a squeeling noise coming from the passenger side of the car. When gently reving the engine the pitch of the sound does not change. It stays constant. When the temp needle raises to normal the sound disapears in 1 second. I'm not overheating no problems. I did spray some belt dressing on the belts. The sound did not go away. I called a volvo speed shop they told me not to worry about it because it's the age of the car. Any ideas??

I have a '94 850. I had a similar issue with my car. As it turned out it was the tensioner pulley. It was the original and had given me 170,xxx miles of service.

I'm not quite sure if the pitch changed on it as it was about a year ago that this happened. I'm 90% certain that it didn't change and the sound either happened or didn't.

The car liked to do it more when it was cold though and it wasn't so much a squealing as it was whirring. I could isolate the noise while sitting in park or neutral and revving the engine to particular RPMs but it was very difficult to get it and therefore difficult to show my local mechanic.

Much luck to you.

It's never really that cold in Las Vegas :) If the noise does not change pitch with the throttle, that eliminates the belts. So, it could be your engine fan or the blower for the heat/defrost.
Try turning the heater fan speed to zero and waiting for the car to warm up before turning it back to auto.
