replacing spring seats, should also do front mounts? 850

At 125K, I have a bad spring seat and original struts, so I'm going to be replacing the spring seats, front struts (bilstein tourings), and will also put new bilstein shocks on the rear along with shock mounts and retaining clips. I already have IPD's endlinks.

Based on everybody's experience, how many have found that the front mounts actually need replacement? At $80 a pop, I am considering omitting these, since the spring seats take most of the wear. Is this penny-wise and pound-foolish?

Thanks for your feedback!

A dealer parts man told me the bearings often are found to be bad if the spring seat was bad and was not attended to for a while. I had one side spring seat go bad on my 95-850 and did not attend to it for some weeks. When I removed the strut the bearing was quite tight compared with a new one, so I replaced it.
I'm about to do the other side.

So I guess the conclusion is if possible inspect the bearing then decide. My personal choice for this type of repair is an OEM part even though it is more expensive.

suspension work--springs/coils too? and help me identify rear shocks, pls. 850

So I just ordered bilstein touring struts/shocks for the front and rear along with spring seats and mounts (front and back) from shox.com (close to $600 with tax and shipping in CA, but a lot cheaper than if I didn't source these parts). My indie thought I should also replace the springs/coils in the front--is this going overboard?

And can someone tell me if these are nivomats, 'cause if they are, then I'd better change my order before it ships...

    Hi Paul-

I recently swapped mine out when I did the struts - eEuroparts had them for $20 a piece. Overall they were still in good condition, but showing some fatigue. However, at this price I felt as though it fell in the "it will never be easier" category.

So it looks like Front Strut Mount Bushings = Spring Seats ($20). No need to replace Strut Bearings ($40-90, depending on oem vs aftermarket)?

      Thanks.

        Hi Paul,

I did both at 150k, but should reveal that I was able to get Monroe struts as part of a buy one get one free promotion ($70 for both) and felt I "owed" the car a little more. I did use the Scan Tech models with no problems.

On my car, the strut bearings seemed fine (no noise) when I spun them. I did the same job with a family member on his at 100k and his right assembly sounded gravely.

I'm not sure where you live, but on the east coast I get these parts in less than a day so you may want to pull and inspect each part before ordering. If that's not practical, you may want to order both since a faulty bearing assembly could have contributed to the seat failure.

        Mike
