93 850 glt flashing arrow questions 850 1993

Hi. I noticed someone posted about the pnp switch. I have a 93 850 glt n/t. My problem is that my mechanic (has worked on volvos for 30 yrs) changed out my pnp switch when it started flashing last month. It never quit flashing after he replaced it. So he realigned it. Went again this past Mon. and he put in a new switch. It still won't quit flashing. He checked codes--nothing. No CEL light. Someone suggested a new transmission but the car runs fine except for slow take off speed. We also changed tranny fluid and it was fine--no burnt smell, was still reddish-brown color.

If anyone has had a problem like this Please let me know.

Could whatever the PNP is hooked to be bad?

went and checked a1 got back the following: 3--2--3.

Also checked slots a3 (3--1--4) and a7 (1--2--2 and 1--3--2)

where can I find out what those mean?

A-1 (323) = lock up slips or is not engaged
A-3 (314) = Right rear ABS wheel sensor open-circuit
A-7 (122,132) = Instrument panel problems. 122 = engine coolant temp sensor interval too long. 132 = engine speed sensor signal missing.

First, try to clear all of the codes, starting with A-7. If the speed sensor is a problem, that will affect the transmission.

Your "mechanic with 30 years of experiance" should know that PNP switches for 1993-1995 850's are fairly bullett proof and seldom fail. He should also know how to read DTCs. The DTCs are also used in the 200/700/900 cars.

If the tranny lockup seleniod fails, there is a specific code for that. Your 323 code indicates that it failed to lock up because of other electrical problems.

went to volvospeed. cleared codes. codes 122 and 132 came back so did 323. I know pretty much next to nothing about how to fix this car. So please forgive questions. What is engine speed sensor signal and how do you fix it? what is the engine coolant temp sensor and how would you fix that?

I wasn't sure about this mechanic but no one around here fixes volvos (nearest dealer is 200 mi. one way)

any and all help would great!!!

I am sorry you live in Arkansas :) Have your mechanic replace the engine coolant temperature sensor and put in a new Volvo thermostat(not one of the generic off-the-shelf). They are right next to each other and should only take 30 minutes to replace both.
The speed sensor... it is located under the air cleaner and part of the main wiring connector on top of the transmission housing. It is a pain to get to, but easy to replace.

If the arrow is flashing, there must be a code in the A-1 slot of the onboard code reader. Otherwise, the transmission control unit could be bad.
If you have the radio code handy, disconnect the ground cable on the battery for about 30 minutes. This will clean out the computers of all stored codes and they will refresh themselves.

Thanks. I will check that tomorrow. What is a transmission control unit? Also if I get a code is there some where where I can check and see what the codes mean?
