Opionions V70-XC70

I am thinking of buying a 2000 model with 70,000 miles for my daughter to take to college. The car is local to TN one owner, dealer serviced always.

We have had a 760 Turbo (1990) for the last 6 years and have loved it. It is just a little long in the tooth now (260,000 miles(.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

The 2000 models have only 2 major problems. The electronic throttle module, do a search on ETM, which is factory covered for 10 years or 200K miles, must be dealer serviced - no DIY.
The other is the AC evaporator. They tend to start leaking after 5-7 years and are very expensive to replace, the entire dash must be removed just like the 240 heater core.
If your daughter drives like mine, you will want a solar powered trickle charger that she can plug in when the car is going to sit for more than a week. Fairly cheap on Ebay and in the box at VW parts.

If the 760 is running well get it checked out by an independent that likes volvos ... he will no doubt pronounce it good for another 100k. A V70 will cost you $$$$ in repairs.

Ok, I am probably asking for a sudden repair bill, lol but I think the v70 if it was reasonably taken care of would be a great car for her. My 98 v70 now has 110,000 miles; the only real expensive problem I have had over the years was a blown rear main oil seal (I probably could have avoided it had I been serious about cleaning and maintaing the PCV system). Anyhow otherwise, I service her regularly and of course buy tires and brakes etc--it has been a great car.

BTW, the a/c evap issue has not affected me yet and I have several 70 series owners that have not had a problem. On the other had all of the 850s had this issue.

best of luck on the decision.
