S60 Trans Bangs when first put in drive. S60

Trans bangs into gear when you first put it in drive. I had the trans serves done at 62,000 miles. This only happens when the car is cold. Current miles = 80,000. Thanks for any info.

S60 Trans Bangs when first put in drive. S60

Check all motor mounts first. On my V70 it's happened twice because of front engine mount and then the upper torque mount.

Two ordinary things come to mind.... S60

re: "...Trans bangs into gear when you first put it in drive. I had the trans serves done at 62,000 miles. This only happens when the car is cold...."

I can think of two things, offhand:

1) Your "cold" idle speed is somehow too high.

2) Your tranny fluid level is too low (the shock of being pumped up suddenly give the "bang").
Keep in mind that the proper fluid level depends on temperature -- I'd be skeptical about assuming what the fluid's temperature is just because you drove it a few miles. This post,
http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1160386
deals with AW70 (240s') trannies, but the idea (not to jump to conclusions about the fluid temperature) applies to any transmission -- better to be safe than sorry.

There's a third possibility -- that some drivetrain component beyond the transmission is worn out, and its "clunking" is what you're hearing .... If this was a RWD car, I'd also check the driveshaft (e.g., U-joints, etc.), but your car isn't RWD. But you might want to check the halfshafts, etc. (you didn't say whether you have FWD or AWD). Also, in this vein, how about the engine-transmission mounts? Maybe the combined unit is just rocking, but now it's rocking metal-to-metal, the more so because the cold idle is a bit higher (if not necessarily #1, above).

Good luck.

This car is an AWD. I failed to give you more details (Sorry). When I put the car in drive after sitting over night (Cold) there is a long hesitation (about 3-4 seconds)then in bangs into gear. After you drive the car a very short distance the problem will not occur until the car sits for a long time (like over night). What I find strange is that I have to back it out of the garage and it does not happen when I put it into reveres.
Thanks

Now it seems even more like merely low fluid level .... S60

re: "...When I put the car in drive after sitting over night (Cold) there is a long hesitation (about 3-4 seconds)then in bangs into gear...."

Now, noting the long hesitation, it sounds even more like low fluid level. I would also have suspected old contaminated fluid had you not already mentioned that the fluid was flushed just a couple of tens of thousands of miles ago (in either case, fluid isn't circulating properly and pressurizing the system at first), but now discounting that, it seems that the fluid level is going to be the most probably answer; as the fluid warms, it expands and the level rises, so it doesn't reoccur until the next cold morning.

So check the fluid, but be careful which temperature scale (side of dipstick) you'll use (remember the link I gave you about temperature and fluid level).

Hope this helped.
