96 Volvo is smoking badly 850

My 96 850r is really smoking. Mechanic said its oil in the turbo and just drive it till it dies. Has 156k and I dont like that answer. Any ideas.

Thanks for the reply. What should it cost me in labor to put in a rebuilt turbo if I can find one cheap. Im on Long Island near Queens and everything is so expensive.

It is ok to drive it like that, but you risk messing up the cat and oxygen sensors which ups the bill for repair. As Klaus says, go for rebuilt. I buy used ones from yards that I fully trust and save a lot.

You have a good mechanic! When the seal goes inside a turbo, oil is pushed into the air flow. You should be collecting a large quantity of oil just below the radiator. All of the intake air piping will get a good coat of oil, including the throttle body. You should also notice a very slight decrease in boost power.
Go for a rebuilt turbo, they cost around $300. Then get all of the lines cleaned, including the throttle body.
