Did 850s have 4-lug wheels? Sold a guy 5-lug wheels and now he wants his $ back. 850

Hi guys, my first time over on the FWD board ;)

I sold these wheels to a guy locally with an 850.

(top wheel -- came off my '96 960)

This was a month ago. He left me a message today and said he wants to bring them back, as his hubs are 4-lug.

Did volvo have anything with 4-lug wheels in the past 20 years? 25 years?

Many thanks!

I have to side with Rule308 on this one. A verbal contract to buy them back should be as good as gold. Considering the weather, he may not have had a good oppertunity to mount his new wheels. Just check the wheels for damage before accepting them back.
If you have Craigslist.com in your area, use it for relisting them. Give yourself a "restocking" fee :)

The 1993 (first model year) 850 had 4-lug hubs. Hate to say it, but he should've asked to be sure that his car took oddball wheels especially since they came off a 960.

Thanks, Will. Yeah, I sold them a month ago and told him he could bring them back if they didn't fit. Well, I was thinking I'd hear from him in a day or two --- not a month.

I'm on the fence on what to do. You would think he'd know whether he needed four lug or five lug wheels.

What do you think? He paid (trying to remember) $250, or whatever my asking price was. Thanks!

That's your call. You did say you'd take them back if they didn't fit, but after a month... I'd say you'd be a real nice guy to take them back. I dunno how much you trust this guy, so I say make extra sure to take a look at the wheels before you fork over the dough. Make sure they are the same ones in the same condition you sold him! Hate to suggest that, but unfortunately those kind of people are out there.

He could always sell/trade them himself. $250 sounds a fair price. The extra cost to you is that you'll have to go through the hassle of selling them twice. How about a "re-listing fee"?

Good luck.

Don't know what there is to be on the fence about, you told him that you would refund him his money if they did not fit, they don't fit so refund the man his money. It sounds like a simple misunderstanding, neither of you guys knew that the 4 lug wheels were a one year model only thing. It sucks because you probably have spent the money already but really, put yourself in his shoes, 4 weeks flies by real fast.

BUT.................. 850

Thanks for the reality check, guys. I appreciate it.

Yeah, I am on the fence (admittedly so), probably because the four weeks passed. We're in Texas, so I know the weather wasn't the problem. The thing is, I'm not sure what the guy did with them (if anything) this past month. Lets say he ran them and hit a pothole and the car started to shimmy, and he figured he'd see if he could pull one over on me? Anything could've happened.

Also, wouldn't you think that if you are buying wheels you KNOW beforehand if you need four / five / six lug wheels?

Yeah, I know I told them I'd take 'em back if they didn't fit. But a month later...

Would I be a total jerk if I said:
1) I can't refund your money or take them back -- it's just been too long. You try to sell them.
2) I will try to resell them for you. I will pay you back whatever I sell them for.
3) I need proof they won't work for you. What year is your 850? Can I come see the car?

Thanks again. Let me have it if I'm being a jerk about this.

Yes, in my opinion you would be a jerk.
