All you need is 3/4" square bar stock (steel or alum), 1.25" long. Your local fab or machine shop probably has a small piece of scrap they would give you.

A good thing to keep in the car, along with an open-end (or adj) wrench and a spare belt.

Use a 1/2" breaker bar and duct tape a couple of pennies on one side.
    Works great.

I have used the crowfoot method described in the link provided by Klaus. Works really well.

What I wanted to add is that I got a Serpentine Belt Tensioner tool from Autozone (free rental). The tool did NOT fit the Volvo, BUT it had a crowsfoot in it that worked in conjunction with a ratchet extension. My point is, if you don't own crowfoot wrenches, you can get by without buying more tools, provided you have a ratchet extension that's long enough.

That tensioner is a piece of crap. the hole is too tight for a 1/2" sqaure drive, it is too confined, and too ahed to get at.

I gave up and used a big pry-bar to push on the tensioner. It wasn't too difficult once I decided not to use the square drive hole. I would hate to be stuck at the side of the road trying to do that repair.

Made my own from a square headed bolt (3/4 inch?) and then put on a nut that I can grab with an open end wrench. You can also lock it open with a drill bit or nail. Look at where there is a small hole near the square hole. When you wind lup the tensioner you can slip in the pin.

    Good luck,

How many miles/years can one expect the S-belt to last?

Regardless of mileage, it has been suggested changing belts every 5 years. Supposedly the same for hoses. The serp. belt life---not sure, but close to same as timing belt. BUT, the serp. belt can be checked visually for cracks, crazing and tears. If you see those developing, change it.

        Good luck,

        dickl
