Bay13 has a nice write up on changing the pollen filter. I am adding this option and purchased the Filter Retainer from fcp.... Will the I be able to just lift the edge of the cowl to also slip in the Retainer, or will the wipper arms and entire cowl need to come off?

I took the whole thing off so that I could clean everything up. I suggest you spend the time to do this the very first time, it's not hard. There is a plastic funnel in above the fan that needs to come out and be tossed.
Yes, you could just lift the corner and be done with it, but I found a bunch of leaves and dirt under the cowl. Besides, a little paste wax never hurt anything :)

Thanks Klaus.. Makes sense... Hey, on my XC70 the cabin filter is under the dash, it just dawned on me that with this retrofit the filter is exposed to the elements... Is their any concern, like the thing getting wet and moldy?

Actually, any water will run down beside the filter, not through it. BTW, you will replace that filter at LEAST once a year, if not more often. It gets dirty fast. Order a few to save on shipping.
http://www.autohausaz.com/ has charcoal ones, but not very cheap.

Not sure about the XC70. In my 850, after the retrofit, water dripping down to the cabin filter element and hence into the blower fan. I had tried different method to divert the water away from the filter but no luck. Water drips down to the filter from the underneath of the big black plastic cover (the one between the bottom of the windshield and the firewall edge.
After the retrofit, the back side of this big plastic cover is very very close to the top edge of the filter element. Apparently, the retrofit kit raises the filter element towards to the bottom of this plastic cover. Any water that gets to the underneath of the black plastic cover, would have a great chance to drip down to the filter element and then the housing of the blower motor.

CC,
See if the rubber weather strip is loose or missing from the bottom of the cover.
On my S70 the adhesive gave out and the rubber was not anchored enough to seal against the body.
Also make sure that the edge of the cover fits completely under the windshield moulding lip.
Good luck.

There is a rubber weather strip under the big black plastic cover ?? Can you tell me where the rubber strip is ? I can then double check that to see whether it is still in good shape.
Thanks,

CC,
It's along the front (facing the engine) behind the lip
It's 1/2 inch tube-type rubber w/o a foam core. You'll see where it fits when you look at the underside of the cover.
I'm told it is very common for this seal to come loose on the 800 series due to engine compartment heat. If it isn't there or not properly positioned, water will flow directly into the fan area.
Hope this helps.
