Scantech tailgate struts 850 1997

I bought a pair of Scantech tailgate struts from eEuroparts (they're the same ones as on FCP Groton's website also), but I can't get them to fit my vehicle. They are about quarter of an inch too long to go on the "balls" in the tailgate and on the body, even with the tailgate lifted as far as possible (and they are about quarter of an inch longer than the OEM volvo ones that were in there). Anybody else have this problem? Is there a trick to making them fit, or do I send them back in exchange for the OEM struts?

Thanks

Rod

Figured it out... 850 1997

I hadn't realized at first that the plates that the forward balls are mounted on are adjustable - so I loosened the bolts, pushed them all the way forward and they now fit.

Thanks for all the help.

I just tried to use the ScanTech struts from FCP Groton on my '98 V70 XC just last week. These are the same struts as you have, and I had the same problem.

I emailed back and forth with FCP Groton about the issue, and they were less than receptive to my problem. They told me "We've sold thousands of these and nobody ever has a problem with them." I did some looking and found a few other posts online with the same issue, but FCP still didn't want to refund my purchase price plus shipping.

I don't know if I'd recommend it, but I finally ended up loosing the 3 bolts that secure the trunk side of the hinge. This, plus extending the tailgate as far as I could, made me able to snap them into place. If you decide to try this method, use a pencil or marker to outline the hinge location before yoe loosen any bolts on the hinge. The hinge is adjustable, and you'll want to make sure you reinstall it in the same position.

Check out this. It looks like maybe you can adjust the forward ball position a little.

I put Sachs on my car which are probably the original brand. To get them on I had to have someone hyperextend the tailgate pretty high. It was then just a matter of lightly tapping them on. Get someone you trust and be careful of your fingers!

The OEM ones have an adjustment nut at the ball end. If scantech does not, get new ones.
