Engine stalls/quits below 1500 RPM 850 1996

Folks I'm new to this forum as my daugher owns the Volvo. I need your help and I appreciate it. She has a '96 850 Turbo w/ about 112K on it and it is an automatic. I've replaced plugs last summer and done general maintenance including the tranny flush when she is home from college. Last week she drove to work and the car was fine. At the end of her shift she started it and it would not hold the idle, it stalls below 1500 RPM. She states the car did not run rough prior to this. I had her hold the idle for a while at about 2000 RPM and the temp gauge indicates it is working so it is probably not a temp sensor. O2 sensors give you ample warning (usually) in setting the check engine light and poor gas mileage. This is not the case and the check engine light did not remain on after initial start up.

Any ideas where to start or what it may be? I am used to doing repairs as I've owned Alfas in the past need I say more but I miss them) and do all my own work on my BMW, air cooled VW, and Jeep. This seems like a fuel delivery or sensor problem to me.

Thanks,

Pete

    Engine stalls/quits below 1500 RPM 850 1996

Thanks for the info and advise gentlemen. I'll be towing the car home this weekend and will give it a good going over. Hopefully, it is the MAF and the cleaning/fixes you described will do the trick. I need to make this car very reliable as my daughter is a good 4 hours away in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech.

Again, thanks a bunch. If you know anybody that is interested in an Alfa Romeo 164S and wants a project, send them my way. Work Phone: 804.916.1300 I just do not have the desire anymore; I'd rather build a canoe. I'll sell it cheap. I also have a 164 L. It is a project and cheap too.

Pete, I am sorry I forgot to mention this. Another symptom of a bad MAF, that is very evident under the circumstances you describe of being able to hold the engine running only above 1.5KRPM, is the exhaust smell. It will either smell of rotten eggs or a distinctively strong smell when compared to that of a normal running engine. Usually the MAF fails around 100K miles.

What is intriguing is the fact that the check engine light is not on, which is not common when the problem is MAF related. Perhaps, as an additional suggestion, some of the vaccum lines may have come unplugged or may have developed a crack or a leak. Take a good look at them too.

    Good luck!

It appears to be the MAF sensor. In order to make a better diagnosis, disconnect it and start the car. If it is the MAF, it should be able to idle OK even though the engine will not run properly at higher RPMs. The strange thing is that the check engine light is not on. A problem with the MAF usually triggers the check engine light. Perhaps you have a bad connection. The connector on the MAF is known to have oxidation problems over time. You can also unplug and plug it back several times to clear the contacts.

    Good Luck

Check the connection to your MAF (mass air flow sensor). There is a fix for it at http://volvospeed.com/Repair/maf_secure.php
I had the same problem so I cleaned the connection and did the above fix and that did the trick. Sometimes it will act up all you have to do is disconnect and reconnect the plug and it will work fine. Hope it helps.
