Buying a 850? 850 1994

Hi,

I'm just looking for opinions on buying a 93 850 turbo wagon w/ 156 k miles. The last 70k were highway (65mph). It is shiney clean w/ a nice sound system, all leather, AC works & a spare set of winter wheels. The salt up here hasn't seemed to eat it yet.

Asking $3500 Canadian (about $3K US). I have only owned RWD Bricks 740's & a 940.

Are these models fairly reliable? Any obvious problems to look for?

Cheers ibs740

Hi, having 2x 850 -94s N/A 125kW the vagon 250kkm and sedan 210kkm I can only give positive feedback. vagon had fuel pump relay, the sedan input manifold gasget leak and cabin fan motor, all other things wear maintenance like breaks etc.

I have a '94 850T and the thing you have to ask yourself is, do I like to work on cars? There are plenty of resources and sources of parts out there. For service bookmark www.volvospeed.com (service-Bay 13). I guess like most cars the 850 has a list of things that go out that are pretty common to 850 owners. I have to say that the car is reliable but I have had just about every problem that is common to the 850. I've done the work myself, with the exception of an AC evaporator o-ring which was done by the dealer under an extended warranty. It is an EXPENSIVE fix since the dash has to be removed. To be fair a lot of the stuff I've done is under regular service like struts, brakes, timing belt, O2 sensors etc. and I just finished CV joints and tie rod ends. I've also done seat back cable, PNP on tranny, knock sensors, MAF sensor connection fix, wiper blade arm correction (drivers side), headliner on sunroof, black roof trim strips on my wagon, fix tail gate rattle and I know I'm forgetting a thing or two. Turbo's next.

    Hi,
I can only echo Klaus`s opinions. 93`s have some issues as he suggested.
$3500 CDN seems like a lot for 156K km even if it`s shiny/clean & has a great stereo. My wife had a 95 850T wagon(just bought a XC70 so I get the 850), with 440K km on it & it still runs strong plus looks great.
For not much more $ you can probably get a good 850. A neighbor sold his 96 last summer for approx 6K & it was almost mint tho lots of hiway miles.
    Good Luck!
    Rich

If it is a 1994, go ahead. If it is a 1993, don't bother with it. The 1993 model is full of unique parts, including a weak tranny.
