S70 oil change (98 GLT) S70

I have 2 simple questions on oil changes.

The Volvo owners manual states capacity is 6.1 US quarts, is it really that much?

It further states to add an additional .95 US quarts if you drain the oil cooler on a Turbo. How is this done, and is it normally done or not?

Sorry if these questions appear stupid, my 240 was much less complicated. This is my first Turbo.

Hi Mike,

I'm fairly new to the FWD Volvos as well, at one point I promised I'd never own one. Hahaha, hard core RWD. Now I have one and so does my sister. Still have my beautiful V90 though :) So yeah, the whiteblock 5 and 6 cylinders seem to take about 6L of oil during a change. You can pretty much just go ahead and pour 6L in, start it, turn it off and check to see if it needs a little more. As for the oil cooler; it's not common to drain it when changing the oil, in fact I don't even know where the drain is. One note is that these engines like synthetic oil and make sure your PCV system stays clean to prevent oil leaks. Nice clean coolant and tranny fluid is a good thing too.

Thanks for the info Chris.

I do plan to check the PCV system and have ordered the auto flush kit from IPD to do the tranny fluid as well.

Any suggestions on a good manual? I used Bentley's for my 240. Preferred Haynes years ago over Chilton but haven't looked at either yet for the S70.

Thanks again,

Mike

Hi Mike,

No problem. I'm not quite sure what's involved with getting the OE Volvo manuals for the S70/V70, but I'm sure it wouldn't be inexpensive. This will help with working on the car though: http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-SV70-1998-2000/Books--Manuals-&-Media/Haynes-Shop-Manuals/p-128-360-1450/ I have the 850 version and while it's not the best, it's certainly better then nothing! Good luck with the S70, sounds like you're on the right track :)

There is no "manual" for your car. Check Ebay for pirated CDs which cover all year Volvos.

I always add 6 quarts of oil after a change. I never change the small amount of oil in the cooler, it is not worth the effort and won't make much difference anyway.
