Any reason to stay away for 1998 XC 70? V70-XC70 1998

Looking at exceptionally clean 1998 XC 70. Any reason to stay away from it (price is very, very good).

Gary

I am on my second V70XC (04’). My first was a 98’ drove it 98,000 miles no major problems. There were some small problems in the beginning most were resolved under warranty. I suggest you get the records from the Dealer.

We have a 98XC V70 that had to have its transmission replaced at 55k. Had to fight with Volvo N. America to get them to give us a refurbed transmission (still had to pay labor). Numerous electrical problems, and the AC compressor went at 125k. I won't ever buy a first model year for anything ever again.

Thanks for the info. Car has around 100,000 on it and Carfax comes up clean with two owners. This particular owner has had it for 1.5 years, owns 5 cars (including a Jag XKE) and wants to shed one.

Consumer Reports has the Volvo Cross Country ('98-'01) on its "Used Cars to Avoid" list.

I'm not saying "don't" because I did, just be prepared. (Hmmmmm. If the current owner thinks an E-Jag is more relaible than a XC....)

You need to be more specific about the car at which you are looking. How many miles does the car have? What is the history of its maintenance? What repairs have been done during its history?

The early awd cars are high maintenance. The tires must be of equal wear at all times, the angle gear needs to be replaced every 60K miles or so. The awd robs about 20bhp and 2-3 mpg.
Depends on the service records and if you can trust the seller. If you don't need awd, get a T5.

      Can you de-X an XC? V70-XC70 1998

Is it possible/advisable to convert an XC70 into a straight V70? I mean, if you remove the drive shaft and let the bevel gear go to hell, do you then have a fairly reliable light pressure V70? Or do other problems linger?

Dropping the rear drive shaft is an easy way to get rid of all of the AWD problems. You will then have a normal V70. The angle gear stays put and full of fluid.
The problem is resale time. The drive shaft is balanced, and the bolts are weighted differently, IIRC, so putting it back on could be a problem. And you sure can not sell it as an XC without awd.
The angle gear box fluid can be pumped out and refilled, preferably every 60K miles.

        Klaus
