Excessive oil usage 850

Really looking for some help on a 96-850GLT non-turbo with 145K miles. Until 130K the car did not use a drop of oil. Car went to the dealer with a miss and after three or four weeks of various repairs the miss went a way, but the car started to drip oil from the rear main seal very slowly and started burning a quart of oil every 3,000 miles. If you let the car idle for five to six minutes and accelerate, there is a noticeable puff of smoke from the exhaust, then burns clean again. Replaced the flame trap, which I do every 10,000 miles or so anyway, and no improvement.

Went on a trip this weekend and had the oil changed before leaving. 500 miles later - the car was 2 1/2 quarts low and there was an oily film covering the entire rear of the car. Checked the flame trap, which was clean but did have new (clean) oil pooled in the elbow coming from the intake manifold. With the engine running, I took the oil filler cap off and put my hand over oil filler hole and no suction or pressure. This is really starting to become bothersome and concerning. This car should not be using the quantity of oil it is. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oliver

I would suspect that you need a new oil separator and lines. The rear main will only "blow" when there is a lot of crankcase pressure, and that you do have.
In the mean time, might I suggest that you pull the dipstick and just let it sit on top of the hole without engaging the O ring? In other words, loose. That will allow excess pressure to go that way, instead of the RMS.
The damage may already be done to the RMS if it is leaking profusely, and that will require removing the tranny, $$$.

      Klaus,

Thank you for the advice. Oddly enough I purchased new oil lines that are under the intake manifold from Groton when this started, but the dealer doesn't want to install because they say they have never seen oil lines get plugged up.... Thanks for the dipstick idea. I will give that a try and get my indy to install the new lines.

It is not "just" the lines, there is an oil breater/separator box down there which also has the line coming up the the oil filler cap. The box itself gets gunked up and plugs the lines.
