A/C problems as usual 850 1996

OK, I know there are a plethora of issues with the a/c systems and the most common fix is a proper recharge, however.......

I have an issue that many others are having and some other problems, I am really just looking to see if the cost is going to be worth the a/c.

First, the a/c works great at highway speeds on long drives, when I slow down and get into city driving it stops blowing cold air. If I turn it off for 5 min or so and back on, it works some more. Could be clutch, need recharge, blocked drain (as I see none of the usual condensation pools under the vehicle and it is worse on hotter days). Now the good stuff...

I have the automatic climate control, and if it is on AUT or manual, the driver 2 vents blow cold air and the passenger side blows warm air, even with both sides turned to the same setting or all the way down.

The question is could the problem (any ideas) on what is causing the pass side failure also be causing the intermittent a/c cooling or am I riddled with problems?

Also, where can I find a digram on the 96 cabin temp probe and the drain tube location?

Thanks, sleepless in Seatle because it's too hot (well NC anyway)

I sent you a PDF on the system. You could also have an engine cooling fan relay problem, explaining why it works on the highway.

Thanks for the PDF. The sensors were not clogged, maybe it's the switch in the dash???? I don't really see that much condensation from the system so I'm going to clean the drain and go to a shop that can evac the system and recharge it and stop at that I guess. My last 240DL had about 400K miles on it before the AC stopped which is why I went to another Volvo, I can't complain.

I believe the temperature sensors are in one end of the grab handles above each front seat. It is common, I think, for them to become clogged with lint. I also think you can pry it (blockage) out carefully. This may explain the passenger side malfunction. I have thankfully never had a problem myself. Good luck. don 182K 1995 854T
