clicking-possibly CV joint 850

About a month ago, I changed the CV boots on my '97 850 turbo using the kits from Volvo. Now I get a loud click when I accelerate and more so when I turn left. I was careful to keep everything clean and put in new grease when I had it apart. I'm also sure that the axle nuts are tight enough. The noise was NOT there before I changed the boots. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Dave

Changing the boots certainly shouldn't have caused any problems unless of course they had been torn for a while and CV joint wear had allready started. Check to be sure your wheel lugs haven't loosened up.

Yeah I agree, changing the boots shouldn't have caused the problem. It makes a loud click when I first accelerate or turn in either direction. The wheel bolts seem okay as I retorqued them a couple of days ago.

      Thanks,
      Dave

Is there some play in the hubs (a bit of wear in the splines)? This has caused some noise in P2 cars (S80, S60, etc.), but seems to be a annoyance more than a problem with reliability consequences.

Worn suspension bushings can also result in clunking noises.

the noise you are hearing is no doubt from cv joint, disturbing the joint when replace boot can bring this noise on, i use aftermarket boots they are much softer and fit them with special air tool to expand the boot, without out having to remove the drive shaft

I changed an outer CV boot back in April. A pain! I used an Empi brand boot; no one could find a split boot for me, and it seems that they are not the greatest idea anyway. They are glued together, and it would be hard to keep the boot grease-free until you got the glue in there.

I bought a car in which the previous owner had put on a split boot on the driver's side shaft. It appeared to be very poorly designed. Or perhaps it was just poorly installed. It had these small ears with very small (#2) screws in them. The heads pulled right through the rubber. It started coming apart immediately and led to replacement of the shaft. I wasn't going to play around with boot replacement.

              Good luck.
