Starting Troubles 850 1993

Hi. Car won't start. Easily takes a "jump," then stops as soon as the jumper cables are removed. Car has been running great, w/exception of periodic flashing of yellow "overdrive" (trannie?) arrow and driving mode light -- this seems related to heavy rains and disappears after a couple of drives. Not sure if the "not starting" issue is connected. Thanks for any advice.

Thank you for your thoughts. The battery is older (5years) and the car has not been driven as much since I got the 240 wagon. Have not tried replacing the battery, although it was my first thought, and am getting from responses that there might be more to it. Thanks for the flashing arrow input, too. Sounds like the wet weather connection is valid.

Your alternator is not putting out enough voltage to keep the car running and the battery is also below 10 volts. Get the brushes on the alternator replaced. It should be putting out 14.7V

The shift arrow problem is not related. That is a function of a faulty PNP switch, or its wiring connector needing cleaning and smeared with di-electric grease to keep the water out.

Please answer your responses. We need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

I'd say you need a new ignition switch.
