850 AC 850

Wife's car 95 850. Love it, but AC shuts off after driving 15-25 miles. Stays off a while, then comes back on. Is it internal, e.g., pressure switch, or external, e.g., relay or something else? Thanks.

How about those details. I kinda thought the voltage was low, and cleaned wire plug at compressor and fuse. email me @ gesamuels@hotmail.com Thanks

First you need to locate the wire to the AC clutch. Follow it back from the clutch and you will find a small square box, this is the thermal limiter. It is not needed and is a problem area. Take the wire from before the thermal device (the wiring harness side) and extend this with a few feet of wire and take the wire from the other side of the thermal device and extend the same way. These wires will hook up to a relay(Std Bosch or Hella foglight type relay). This can be mounted any where you decide to put it. The wire going TO the compressor (The wire from before the thermal device) is the trigger wire for the relay. You will need a power source for the load. I took it from the battery. Dedicated wire with a fuse. The other compressor wire is load. This will give you full battery voltage to the clutch. When I did this last year my mechanic thought it was a good idea but how much time will you get? And is it really worth it? So far well over a year of 75 miles a day.
I'm not the best at describing things in writing. Hope this helps.
      Any other questions, please ask.

I had the same problem. The other factor is that not enough power is getting to the clutch. Check the voltage at the clutch wire when it is running. I ran a wire into the car and was able to watch the volt meter as I drove around. The clutch was getting only 11 volts when it would start to get warm. This is not enough to operate the clutch when everything gets hot. I added a relay (std. bosch 40amp.) and gave the clutch full battery voltage. Properly fused. It ran all last summer and is still working fine now. If you need details let me know.

I had the same problem and I spent a lot of time and wasted money on replacing low and high pressure switches, expansion valves, etc... it ended up being just the AC Compressor.

I would suspect the compressor clutch. Try tapping on it while A/C is on and not working. I personnaly used winter broom handle to do that.

if the clutch engages when you tap on it, the clutch is the problem. Better changing th whole compressor since you have to take it off to access the clutch
