Replace timing belt at what mileage? V70-XC70 2001

My XC V70 has almost 77K miles on it. My mechanic, who has serviced my Volvos for years, says it should have the timing belt replaced the next time I bring it in. The manual says to change it at 105K miles. Who do I believe?

Probably a good idea to change it.

Volvo specifies things at 105,000 mi not because that's the best option, but because the car "looks more durable" on the day you buy it.

The truth is, 105,000 is pushing it. Crazy Volvo also ATF flush should wait until 100,000 mi. This, too, is nonsense. The car needs new ATF well before then, according to every mechanic who has checked the ATF quality and found it black / burnt by then, signalling a cooked transmission.

My mechanic said I was very lucky to make it to 105,000 on the original T-belt.

The reason for my rant is I think Volvo misrepresents the maintenance schedule, only to destroy your car around 100,000 miles, so you can go to the dealer and buy another. The fact is, to keep an XC running tip-top, it requires a lot of pricey maintenance. Which is a fun challenge, I admit! :]

Your maintenance manual should specify a TIME as well as a mileage for a belt change.

I have seen a couple of 99-2000 models with the 105K belt go at 96-97K, but not 01 and newer. Personally, I recomend belt and tennsioner pulley at 90k. If the belt breaks, repairs start at 2 grand and go up from there depending on severity of damage and shop choice
