Air conditioning problem - fan? sensor? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! V70-XC70 2001

The AC on my wife's 2001 XC runs great--cold air, acceptable in every way. Occasionally, at random intervals it is like the fan just switches off. The air never blows warm at any time. I've got an arctic blast, then wham! no fan. Occasionally it will come back on and behave as if nothing has happened. If you let the car sit overnight, it generally works ok the next day at first. Then the process repeats itself.

I'm new to the XC, so any help would be appreciated. Fan switch? Some sensor?

    Wig,
That's the new body style, but please check/replace the cabin filter. It could also be the fan relay getting hot and turning itself off.

Please answer your responses. We need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

The Cabin air filter hadn't crossed my mind. I'll replace that tomorrow. My mileage suggests its due. Thanks. I'll check the fan relay too.

Thanks. This is driving me crazy. It's nearly 100 degrees every day here.
