Last week my AC stopped blowing air as cold as it used to. Now it is just fresh...but not cold. The car is a 94 and AC has never been recharged (I believe), so I would think that all it needs is a recharge and that nothing is broken...but I know nothing about AC so it is just a guess.

Today my wife called the volvo dealer, midas and pepboys to check for prices to recharge the system and she got the quotes below. Anyone know if the 850 94 has what they called illegal liquid? what is it? do they replace for free everywhere?

Volvo dealer
$169.00 recharge including leak check + $20 for leak stop if needed.

Midas
$19.99 check plus around $100 to recharge or if we have the old system which has the illegal kind of liquid they change it free

Pep Boys
$39.99 to check for leaks and then about $100.00 for the recharge if nothing is wrong.

    You could do it yourself with a recharge kit found in your local auto parts store.

      All Volvos in this market from '93 year model and later have R-134a in them, the earlier stuff originally came with R-12, the so called illegal stuff. I think there must have been a communication break down when you shopped the price on the a/c service as nobody is going to service your a/c for free. Unless you have some kind of bleeding heart liberal program in your area that uses public money to pay for your conversion it is highly unlikely that a shop is going to do it for free out of the goodness of their heart. Either way though your car came with the supposedly ozone friendly stuff in it already so it will not require anykind of retrofit.

        Thanks. The free stuff sounded weird to me also, but my wife swears that's what they said....maybe their is some kind of clean program in our area.
        We'll get it done at the volvo dealer on Monday.

          It is not free stuf, it is called freon - the popular name for r12. All 850s use r134a. I wouldn't even bother the guys a Midas.

          Please answer your responses. We need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)
