Suggestions for buying a 850 850

I usually hang around in 200 section of this forum . I am thinking of buying a newer wagon , volvo 940 turbo or may be 850 turbo wagon.I see lots of 850 on sale as compared to a good 940 turbo. So I am focusing on 850 .
My experience is limited to a 1990 240 which I have been maintaining for little more than 2 year.

Here is a list of what I want to know about the 850.

What is the ease of repair for a average DIY guy. (e.g. timing belt)

What is the cost of maintenance?

How reliable is this model line.

What should be reasonable mileage of this model

How is turbo model compared to na engine.

Is the manual transmission available in this model.

What is the general impression as compared to 240.

My aim is to get a 1997 850 GLT wagon

Regards
Gopesh

    Suggestions for buying a 850 850 1996

I recently got a '96 854T (5 months ago) after 5 years of owning various 240's ('86 244, '87 244, '89 244). And although I still have my '89 240, I'd much rather drive the 850 turbo - this car just wants to GO! I average 23.5 mpg mixed city/highway (I've got a heavy foot... but she seems to like going 90 mph).

I say go for the 850 turbo, but I do agree that there is more maintenance involved with 850 than the 240. Happy hunting - vroom, vroom!

The turbo is pretty reliable, from what I have read. I love the power of mine (HP). Some people swear the added horsepower of the turbo is needed for them to own the 850. I don't know about the LP. I guess you should drive the three versions and see what you think. GLT sounds like a good compromise between mpg and power.

Maintenenace is pretty frequent for a car this old. Probably a lot of makes, and the 850 is at least avg, and I think possibly higher than avg when it comes to maintenance needs. If you do a lot of work yourself, you can do most things. The people here are very knowledgeable. There are some high ticket items (AC, rear main seal).

I think na gets 1-2 mpg better than turbo. I get 22.5 mpg driving the turbo 74mph 80% and 35mph 20% of the time.

I have heard very good things about the 940, but as you say they are harder to come by.

850/V70s with a manual do exist, but very hard to find. The 1997 and 1998 have the best automatics, but the 5 speed manual is still better.
Maintenance is not that much harder, there is less engine bay space compared to the red block engines, and the timing belt is easy to change if you don't mind being under the car half of the time.
Most of the faults relate to the electronics or the AC, both of which can be a pain. Try to find one that has had the evaporator replaced (10 hours of labor). The timing belts must be replaced at or before 70K mile intervals, unless it is a late production 1998 (those are 105K).
There are 2 different turbo models, high pressure and low pressure. Obviously, the HP is fast, the LPT I have only seen with automatic. The NA models with a 5 speed are no slouches either! They can be driven in the correct power band and drive circles around any 245.
I would look high and low for cloth seating, they do not wear out and are cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
The drivetrain is very reliable, the electronics are otherwise.

Make sure it has service records!!!!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise, if it has been serviced at a local dealership, they will tell you what the records covered.

My 1995 854T gets around 21 city and 25+ highway. The 1998 R gets 19-20 city and 27 on the highway. Our interstates ar faster than the East coast, 70mph in MN and IA, but 75mph in SD and NE. I also set the cruise about 8mph above the limit. I guess I could improve my milage if I drove at 65 :) but that would add 2 hours to my normal trip!

      I just drove a '96 850 GLT (non-turbo) from South Carolina to Connecticut--about 750 miles.

My mileage averaged 29 mpg (with the AC) and 31 (without the AC, driven at night).
