Unable to take the key out of ignition lock V70-XC70 1998

Every now and then I'm unable to turn ignition key all the way to the left,
to 0 position. Key won't come out unless it's all the way back.
After few extra minutes of "playing" with the key, it will eventually move all
the way back, and come out.
What's the problem here ?
The key is stuck approx. 1-2 mm short of 0.

Unable to take the key out of ignition lock V70-XC70 1998

I've experienced this problem as well from time to time. What I discovered was that while the auto trans selector was fully in park, the click-stop that you must pull in before moving it out of park, had not dropped down all the way. When I pulled it down, then I could remove the key.

The solution was to carefully lube this piece of plastic with silicone spray or grease. If using spray, spray a rag and then wipe the plastic tab. You only need a light coat.

    Hope this helps!

IIRC, in the back of the key lock, there is a cable which slides in place to lock the steering column. This can get dirty and sticks. It is possible to take off the clamshell covering the steering column and gain access to this cable. Do not use WD40, just light oil to lubricate it. WD40 is a cleaner.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

Klaus, I'm glad to see someone else who won't use WD 40 as a cure-all. As far as I can see it is a Water Dispersant, which is its primary function and not penetrating oil as other think.
