stalled and stranded 850

Hello everyone.
Just yesterday we were driving and the check engine light turned on, shortly thereafter the electrical (lights, windows, etc) and the a/c started to quit. Finally after 5 minuts the engine stopped. Tried to restart, got one crank and it was completely dead. Just clicking when you turn the ignition. Checked the drive belts and they looked ok. I was wondering if anyone ever ran into this problem or can diagnose what it is.
Thanks in advance.

Before going after your alternator clean battery terminals and clamps.

Take the cover off the end of the alternator remove the brush block unit and check the condition of the brushes. If they're worn down replace'm. I've had them stick in the holder before. A little tap and some cleaning might free them up.

Get your battery fully charged. Then turn off the cabin fan, radio, daytime running lights, and anything else that can use electricity. That should give you about an hours worth of driving.
Sounds like the alternator brushes stopped brushing and your car started to drain the battery.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

Pretty safe bet it's the alternator.

I agree. Bad alternator followed by battery drain.
Probably the alternator voltage regulator which incorporates the brushes needs to be replaced. The battery charge is a good advice. If problem helps again after about one hour, alternator it is.
