Crankcase Pressure Buildup 850 1995

We just purchased a 95 850 GLT non-Turbo For my son. This is our third Volvo besides my 96 855 Turbo with 293,000 miles and an '03 XC. I am getting oil leaking out of the oil cap and dipstick. Before I blow out the main seals, I would like to rectify this problem, if I haven't done so already, I hope. After looking at the postings and Bay 13, I took a look at the Flame Trap and it had already been removed-I guess it's really not needed anyway. The Throttle Body looks clean. No Check Engine alerts are evident on the dash and I haven't hooked up a scanner tool-some day I should buy one. What should I check next? I think the oil separator only applies to the turbo model so that wouldn't apply. Thanks in advance for any assistance...

Also, the small line to the flame trap may be totally clogged. The oil separator box will need to be changed out.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

It appears your PCV system is clogged. I assume you car must have about 160k miles on it so its is about time to have the PCV system replaced for the second time. The PCV and oil separator are very similar both for the turbo and non-turbo models. Your car has one.

Being a 95 model, and with the check engine warning on, you can read the codes without a scanner. You can read the trouble codes using the on board system right next to the engine computer box on passenger side of engine compartment.
If you look up at www.volvospeed.com at the repair database there are complete instructions plus the code meanings.

Good luck!

Hi Larry,

I do believe that your car has a seperator in the PCV system. It could be clogged, but also the vacuum hoses from this seperator to the TB (where the flame trap is located) could be blocked. Whereever the blockage is, it could result in oil (fumes) coming out of oil cap and dipstick - and the TB could stay clean because no oil fumes would reach it.

The seperator is located under/behind the intake manifold and is full day job to get to and replace. I would suggest you start by the vacuum hoses and see if it fixes the thing (remember to look for and replace cracked and weak hoses and elbows).

Hope this helps.

Nikolaj
