Check Engine Light S80 2001

Check Engine Light came on (I think) after a hard left turn accelerating faster than I normally drive. Light went off after a couple of weeks. One week later I replaced the air filter just before taking the car for the Illinois EPA test, which it passed. I did not notice whether or not the state inspector touched the gas cap. Coming home from the test, I noticed the Check Engine light on again. Approximately two miles between replacement of the air filter and the test.
My question is: could the new air filter have done it, or did the EPA test do it?
I am a competent mechanic on older cars, but this OBD is new to me. How can I diagnose codes and shut off the idiot light?

    Check Engine Light S80 2001

    Your car is equipped with OBD 2 which requires a code reader. They are available everywhere for well under $100. You can also pull into any auto parts store such as Advance and they will read the code for free. The readers will also clear a code. If a fault is corrected the code will self clear after so many trips. See the FAQ section for much more info on the subject.

      Thanks, David. I bought an Actron CP9125 code reader from Amazon for $50, and it tells me the fault code is P0236 Turbo/Super Boost Sensor A CKT Range/Perf. I erased the code 3 times and it came right back on, so it appears to be a legitimate fault. Anybody know what it is, or where I should start looking?
      I noticed Saturday the car is hesitating and surging on moderate acceleration, as if the turbo was turning on and off.

        Check Engine Light S80 2001

        Make sure all your vacuum hoses and especially the turbo and intake hoses are secure. If you replaced the air filter, it is possible the pipe connecting to the air filter housing is loose. But it sounds like the problem may have existed before that.

        If all are ok, the boost sensor may be defective. I replaced one a few weeks ago on a friends car for the same problem. It is located in the plastic pipe that goes to the throttle module (ETM)
