CEL mystery reset. Got Lucky? 850

Had the PNP set off the "arrow" lite a couple of thousand miles ago and since I have previously replaced the PNP I just did the rapid gear selector routine to get it back working and been great ever since. Except of course the CEL has been on. I had planned to get the lite reset in December when it goes to the Indy for state inspection. Lo and behold today I notice the CEL is not longer illuminated. Yes, I did a bulb check and it is alive and well. Coincidental, but not related to the CEL, the Service lite has also been on for a few miles/minutes and then going out as it should. Since I do all the maintenance I am used to it coming on and having the Indy reset it also during inspection if it is needed.
Is there a reset software that determines you have more patience than Volvo engineers ever imagined and it concedes defeat? Or do I have a gremlin? Or did someone take my car to the dealer unbeknownst to me?
It is a 1996 and I have had it since new. Have never seem this before. Has anyone else? I have always read the CEL could only be reset by thru the OBD outlet. I have tried several times over the years to reset it with a battery disconnect, some lasting 24 hours, and never had any success.

The CEL will go out on its own after a certain number of fault free drive cycles have been completed, but will retain the code in memory. After something like 50 fault free cycles, the code is erased.

It all depends on what set off the CEL to begin with. It could have been a loose gas cap, which will turn off the CEL after a few engine cycles. There are quite a few which do turn off, like a simple plug misfire, when the ECU dows not get a repeated response. But if the misfire is gross and also trips the Cat warning, then the CEL does not go out even if the misfire is fixed.

I guess it all lies on the severity of the code and if the checklist the engine management goes through recognizes the lack of a code already stored.

I had the CEL last time the pnp took a dive. It occured this time just as I was dealing with the "arrow" lite in the parking lot with sticky pnp. I could have had a simultaneous occurrence of another fault that was a resetable event for the CEL, however, would the resetable take precedence over the pnp caused CEL and still remove the lite? Whatever the reason, it is nice to have it extinguished.

The PNP can cause multiple codes, but the arrow flashing does not automatically cause the CEL to turn on.
