smog issue -- help!! S70

We have a wonderful '98 S70 (71K)...that just failed smog. Car running great. My smog guy asked if I had disconnected the battery lately -- yes, my reply, our battery died and I switched it out. He said the "sensors" have not reset themselves, so a code showed up when he put it on the smog machine. So I took her in to the local Volvo dealership, and they reported since there were no "Ck engine" lites on, they could not reset the codes (by law). They said eventually it would reset by itself. The battery was replaced 6 wks ago...so what do I do?? Thanx for your input!! mark

    Are you in California?

It sounds like your mechanic is referring to the vehicle not being ready for the test. That is a failure in many jurisdictions. It does happen if the battery was disconnected. After that the car has to run through a sequence of self-diagnostics - if the sequence is completed then the car is "ready" for the test, and if all the diagnostics show ok at test time then you pass. It takes some varied driving cycles and some time - different in different cars - for the car to be ready, so the usual advice is to drive the car for a couple of weeks, then get tested.

I don't think there is any way for the dealer or anyone else to preset the system to become ready - other than by driving the car.

Thanx, KSG, for your help! Yes, we are in California --- When we 1st got the car, we have since recalled having a similar situation. Someone advised driving the car up to the nearby Sierra Nevada mtns....and, presto, the S70 was as you say, "READY" -- and she passed w/ flying colors. I guess we need to carve out some time to head up the hills. Thanx again for your input! mark
