1993 850 GLT Just bought and may already have a problem 850

Hi. Sorry, I know little about cars, let alone Volvos, but heard about this board. Had the car a couple of weeks. Just over 200,000 miles. Yesterday and today began noticing occasional, intermittent sense of losing power, followed quickly by a fast surge ahead. The whole thing is very brief. Car continues on driving great. Meanwhile, the check engine light has come on. Before I take this into the new indie mechanic, can anyone familiar with these cars give me an idea? Thanks very much. -- Dinah

Your car has a little black box just behind the passenger side headlight. Lifting off the cover should reveal a wire with a probe. Put the prob into A-2 and push the little black button. There will be a series of red flashes, corresponding to 3 numbers. These diagnostic codes are then matched with a fault and you will know what the problem is.
