Hello All. Had to have my '93 850 GLT towed home today because the outer
rubber part of the crank pulley started falling apart. It made an awful noise, and I was convinced something more serious was afoot. I tried searching the site but couldn't find clear information on removing the crank pulley. Can the outer ring be purchased separately, or is it necessary to buy the entire crank pulley assembly?

Would this ring, by failing, affect the timing?

Also, I'm about due for a timing belt replacement, (100,000 miles). Should I do everything right now, or can the timing belt be done later without removing the crank pulley again?

    If the pully needs to come off, so does the timing belt and the S belt. Same labor charges, so do it all now. Pullies seldom fail, so a used part is an option.
    It is good that you had the car towed. Had the belt slipped, you would be looking for a new engine.

      Klaus, thanks for the reply. Are you saying if the rubber part of the crank pulley fails, it can effect the timing? I thought the crank pulley just turns the s-belt.

        If the S belt breaks or comes off, it can wind up under the T belt and dislodge it -- engine is toast.
