A/C Fan Motor 850

My A/C fan motor stopped working yesterday. Anyone know the average cost of repair/replacement? I haven't check fuses yet...but I doubt that is the problem.

Thanks

If you fan was noisy before it quit, then I would suspect the fan motor. A fairly easy DIY, and a new Behr fan from FCPGroton. But, check the motor first by applying 12V to its lead. It could be the resistor, so check the voltage coming out of the resistor - 12v at high speed.

If you are handy, buy just the motor for $99.

EDIT: Get a cabin filter and holder for it if your car does not have on.

I just started the car for the first time today...I tried the fan...and now it works...why is that?...would that be more likely to be the resistor that is going?...the motor isn't very noisy...I hear something, I think, but I wouldn't say it is noisy.

Hi Klaus,

Being a not very skilled with car repairs myself (a woman), I wouldn't know how to check the resistor. I think I have a tester around here somewhere...where is the lead? I did see the blower on FCP after I had posted my question but if I order it I probably wouldn't be able to replace it myself.

I have been having to re-attach the fat tube to the turbo that's been blowing off every now and then when I forget and gun it to pass...I hear a pop-phfft and then a loss of most power (won't go over 25 mph or so)...I put my little gloves on and get the handy screw driver out and re-attach it...do you know what is causing that?...something restricting the flow of air to the turbo...I don't know.

Thanks,

Lucy

If the fan is making a screeeeching noise, then the bearings are about to fail and it needs to be replaced. If you move the fan speed to max and the fan works, but doesn't at any other speed, then it is probably the resistor. If the lights on the recirc/ac switches blink after start up, then there is a message stored in the computer.
Your 1994 probably does not have a cabin filter and leaves and other bits of trash may have fallen in and are causing the fan to get sluggish. Go to Sears and get a set of Torx drivers, there is a multi driver set for less than $5 whicch folds up and fits in the glove box. You will need it to do almost anything inside the car.
Women can wrench just as well as a man. And if you go to the dragdown menu at the top right of the page, you will find 700/900 FAQ, which will explain how to read the diagnostic trouble codes.
Depending where the compressedd air tube comes apart, determines the problem. If it comes off at the throttle body, then I suggest you tighten the clamp as hard as you can.

It is a '95 and I think it has a cabin filter.

I do have a set of torx.

The only time I've heard a slight high pitched sound is occasionally on the very low end where I was using it most of the time.

I did screw that band on the tube on as tight as I could. The last time it lasted a couple of months before I blew it off again on Monday.

To check for a cabin filter, you need to raise the hood and look under the plastic cover below the windshield. On the passenger side, just remove the 2 torx screws and carefully lift up the shroud and look underneath. If you have a cabin filter, it is probably very dirty - just lift it out and bang it upside down to get the larger dirt out, then order a new filter.
If you do not have a filter, FCPGroton sells the holder and filter for about $25. Just pull out the plastic guide that is in the hole and insert the holder. Realize that everything is now very dirty and probably too late to save the Evaporator and the heater core from dirt buildup.

The "resistor" pack could be having problems when it over heats. If you have climate control, no numbers on the fan speed switch, check B-1 in the diagnostic box for any outstanding codes.

I would take the intercooler hose off of where ever it is blowing apart. Then clean the inside lip with a papertowel and also clean where it gets attached. It may have a bead of oil on it from turbo blowbye.
