Gas Smell S60 2002

I have been noticing a gas smell outside my S60. Anyone encountered this before ? Is there a quick fix ? Its been getting stonger and stornger and while there is no outright leak, I'm starting to get concerned. I suspect it's coming from the fuel pump ? If so how hard are these to replace ?

Own a 2002 XC70 and the fuel pump just cracked. The car wasn't dripping gas but the fuel tank was wet. The pump had to be accessed through a access panel under the back seat. An improved part was available due to poor engineering /manufacture. You might have the same fuel pump hence the same problem.

Yes, Mine turned out to be the same lousy design and had cracks. There is a Volvo recall ( R176) and a NHTSA notice 07V152000. However, Volvo is only recalling the cars in Arizona and Nevada. When I called Volvo USA about it they basically blew me off as I'm not in Arizona/Nevada. They wouldn't even talk to me about my problem - just to see the dealer. So I guess my cracked fuel pump is OK for my daughter to drive around with fuel being pumped in the cabin and dripping down the inside of the car.

I called my local dealer and guess what - the pump was on national backorder and they weren't really sure when it would be available. So I found one at an independent Volvo shop - the owner had 2 left. Why ? Because he said he sees this all the time in S60s and S80s. Poor Pump Housing design that leads to cracks and a dangerous leaking situation. I had to have the car that day so I paid to have the pump replaced at over $500. Thanks Volvo USA, just like the Biodgradable wiring harness fiasco, you are hiding from your responsibility.

You can file a complaint with the NHTSA here:
      http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/?CFID=190092&CFTOKEN=89506074

And look for the recall notices.

I am having the same issue with my 01 V70. I just filed a complaint today. So far I have not seen any other V70 owners with this problem. My heater coil also went out a year ago and my indy mechanic said that it was the first one he had ever replaced on a newer model V70.

        I wish I had my 850 back!!!

Thanks for the website I filed a complaint.

I got the same response from Volvo when I called. No callback.

My repair cost almost $800 and they installed an "improved" part. These cars need to be recalled!!!

        What's this wiring harness deal?

Thanks for filing a complaint G-rock. I filed one also. Let you know what I hear.

P.S. : (Don't worry about the wiring harness fiasco , that was what happened years ago to 240 owners when Volvo decided to go to biodegradable wiring harnesses and the insulation degraded and turned to mush causing all kinds of shorting and electrical failures. Volvo denied there was a problem and owners had to pay a lot of money to rewire their cars and replace components. Since the harness is in a protective sheath many times you don't know whats going on until it's too late. Many owners ended up replacing air flow meters, alternators, ignition modules at their own cost, etc. I had a number of components replaced before I realised that the dealer was acutally splicing new wiring under the sheath every time they replaced a component. Volvo never took responsibility and dealers ripped off many owners not telling them that the true cause for the component failure was really shorting of the wiring harness.)

The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. It may be a loose collar at 1 of the 2 fuel level sensors. Not uncommon for the sensor on the drivers side to leak into the recess in the top of the tank. There is an access panel under the back seat. Remove the seat cushion, pull back the carpet and revove the cover to inspect.
