intermittent groaning sound when releasing clutch pedal in first gear........ 850 1996

The sound only happens in first gear when I am releasing the clutch pedal, but doesn't happen all the time-or even most of the time. Also, when it does happen, it is not consistent. The car could be cold, or having been driven for half an hour. Any help would be appreciated.

Is it possible that it could be the axle? I just replaced the left side, but it probably wouldn't hurt to do the right side as well.

Just about every 850/v70 does this. Mine did it until I replaced the clutch assembly so I am assuming it was that or the release bearing.

Thank you ShadeTek for the help! The clutch was replaced, at the dealer, three years ago and I am still trying to locate the invoice to ascertain if the release bearing was indeed replaced. I know World Pac states that the release bearing is not included in the dealer clutch kit, but I have trouble believing that the dealer would omit such an important part when replacing the clutch. I should also ask if it is something which needs to be addressed a.s.a.p., or can it wait until the next clutch job? Have an absolutely splendid evening one and all :)
