Random no start - low battery charge 850 1996

1996 850 GLT non-turbo, ~140K: Daughter in Colorado reporting recurrence of mystery low battery no start problem. I had a verified mechanic replace the alternator with genuine volvo and install a new Interstate battery 4 months back and the car ran perfectly until wednesday when ghost returned. Daughter reports interior lights OK, but having to use shift over ride to place in reverse or drive, and hrn ging into alarm mode when key removed after no start. A review of the archives back to 2004 showed that maybe a ground or ignition module is at fault and that perhaps we missed a recall n the ignition part. Any clues? I find it hard to blame the alternator, but think interms of bad cable r a ground gone bad. HELP, she needs to move next week. Recommend shop in Engleqwood or Golden?

Most battery drains in the 850's are caused by the glove box door warping and not shutting off the light. Most people just glue or tape something on the spot to the push the switch rod in a little bit more.

OK will check again, but indications are that the glove box door is not deformed. Latest word is that the car started OK when ready to take into Englewood for diagnosis by indy Volvo shop so that cut things short. Something changed. Would the failure to come out of park to drive, and the horn alarm be linked to the battery drain? Seems very odd.

The need for the override switch is usually the microswitch in the center console. They do go bad, but has nothing to do with battery drain or alarm switch. When the key is in the on position, pushing the brake pedal, you can hear a very quiet click if the micro switch is working.

The shop should be able to determine battery drain.

This could also all be tied into an ignition switch problem. Does your daughter have alot of stuff hanging off her keychain? If so ask her to just use the ignition key alone to see if it helps.

Thnaks for the help you guys. Brickboard members always come through with helpful suggestions. I have intermitently been on both the 240 and 850 boards since both cars are out west with the kids. Each time the problem looks mysterious, someone has an insight. Thanks. TR

I just took the light out of the glovebox. You should also make sure that the battery posts, as well as the battery cable terminals, are clean of corrosion. Have a most splendid evening :)
