740 GLE fuel system problems

I read through the information available on the website but I have some questions. My 1986 740GLE all of a sudden seems to seriously lack fuel. I had had occasion misses in the past that I attributed to fuel but for the most part the car ran beautifully. But yesterday all of a sudden it barely ran and I was just able to get it off the freeway. I want to check the pumps using the relay with a jumper to see if the fuel pumps are working. First is the whole board with relays and fuses supposed to come out of the dash? Or do I just pull that particular relay out and take off the top to do the jumping? Second if the motors of the fuel pump or pumps work, does that mean they are ok? If not how would I tell if they are? The tips say not to run the main pump without the tank booster pump for long. But does that not mean that a failure of the tank booster would necessarily cause a failure in the main pump? Also, does anyone think that a fuel filter could clog suddenly enough to cause such a dramatic change. I was going to replace it anyways but I could do that first. Lastly, because I can start the car, even if it runs terribly, does that mean that the relay itself is ok? A mechanic told me that they fail often and if it is original (he said it would be dated), I ought to consider replacing it.

I'd appreciate any advice from someone who knows about this system. Thanks.

    740 GLE fuel system problems

Go ahead and replace the filter first, cheap and needs to be done anyway. If the fuel pump comes on when the key is in posII, then it is OK. And, yes, a clogged filter will describe those conditions.
If the fuel pump relay fails, the fuel pump will not work and the engine will go completely dead.

Try posting this problem on the RWD section.
