heater not working 850 1993

I have a 93 850 w/ 180,000.

My dashboard heater will start when the car is turned on, then stop after 1-2 minutes. I have to restart the car before the heater will work again. If I turn the heater & temps off, then turn them on again, the heater will work for about 10 seconds, I hear whirring, and then it shuts off.

Is it my coolant thermostat or something else?

Thanks,
Leah

If the engine temp is cold and your blower speed is set to auto, then the fan should stay off until the engine starts to warm up. Sounds like you have a broken thermostat, not engine coolant temp sensor.
The engine management at start up always turns the blower on for a self check, then turns it off - that is normal.

    Leah,

Please clarify, do you mean that the blower stops pushing air into the cabin (whether it be hot or cold air)?

    Thanks

Correct; air blows during the few minutes it's working, then no air after 2 minutes.

I did notice yesterday that when the heater was not working that the temp gauge was at the bottom. This morning, I let the car run for 5 min, and the gauge was slowly making it's way to the middle. I turned the heater on, and it worked. In light of this additional info, is it stuck/frozen? And if it's just temperamental, would replacing the part fix the problem?

      Thanks,
      Leah
