ball joint V70-XC70

I am in the process of replacing the driver side half axle on my 1998 V70, and am stuck at the point where I need to put the control arm ball joint back in place. It just won't go back in. I have tried a hammer (I know you aren't supposed to), the floor jack and a huge waterpump pliers but the darned thing won't go back! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar issue on the passenger side of mine when replacing the control arms. The Volvo manual says it is OK to carefully spread the opening with a screwdriver (or similar) in the slot. I did that for mine and also cleaned out the hole with 200 wet.dry paper before it would go in.
