Sticky gas peddle when cold S70 1998

I'm an infrequent poster and appreciate all the collective wisdom of this Volvo community. Now that it is getting colder outside my base engine 1998 Volvo S70 with 102K miles is reminding me of an issue that has been getting a little worse each winter. It seems that the gas pedal will get sticky for the first inch or so of play when the car is cold. The car is easy enough to start up and the gas pedal will work fine and then you will be driving down the road and suddenly you will notice that the gas pedal isn't depressing properly and takes way to much effort to depress. This usually happens anytime from 5 minutes after starting all the way until 20 minutes later if it is particularly cold outside. The issue has always resolved itself but it certainly wakes you up when you are headed down the highway or in traffic and you have to fight your gas pedal.

Is it likely deposits on the throttle body? Should I just pull the air filter (which I just replaced with a K&N) and squirt some throttle body cleaner I bought at Walmart? Or do I need to pull things apart and or look at the linkage?

Thanks in advance for any and all shared experiences and advice!

Regards,
Trevor

I had similar symptoms and they were resolved by a thorough cleaning of the throttle body. There were plenty of gummy deposits in the bore. Might as well do all the things Klaus says, too.

Make sure that the carpet is clear of the underside of the gas peddle. Use some oil on the gas peddle hinge incase there is some dirt lodged there and verify the return spring is good.
Then take the cover off the throttle in the engine bay. It is fairly easy to remove the throttle pully and regrease it to make it roll nicely. Just try to examine it when it is hot, like after a drive. You could also try a few drops of oil inside the cable sheathing, if you decide to remove the cable from the wheel.
