New AWD wagon--V70 or XC70, 2007 or 2008?

I've been driving 240s for 25 years, still have 3, and newest car is a '93 245. All have ipd sways. Figure it's about time to enter the 21st century, but having a hard time finding something I like as much as the 245 (except acceleration). Drove a 2007 XC demo and thought it floated more than my '89 245. Can the float easily be remedied? Is the 2008 better all around? How about the V70? Subaru? Has anyone found a good substitute? All help will be appreciated.
TIA

The wagon has been "redesigned" for 08. More room in the rear than before. I would not buy the new XC because it has the 3.2L engine which gets terrible gas mileage compared to the V70. The LPT is a great mix of engine to car, just not as much fun as the discontinued T5.

Softer suspension? Well, about time... most Americans do not like the old truck suspension Volvos have had in the past. A dealer strut brace and IPD sways would help a lot.

Just remember, the new AWD system is great and you will never slide sideways again! Period.

    The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are a 95 854T and a 98 V70R :)

Just how bad is the mileage with the new engine? Thought the engine was the answer to a maiden's prayer.

        MPG for new XC70

        Read it and weep:

        2008 XC70 w/3.2L = 15mpg city and 22mpg highway

        The V70 w/2.5LPT = 20mpg city and 29mpg highway
        The V70 "R" = 17mpg city and 25mpg highway -- 300bhp!

So as the average fuel price is around $3.35/gal for premium, you are starting to talk lots of bucks.

          "The V70 w/2.5LPT = 20mpg city and 29mpg highway."

The LPT engine you're referring to--I assume that's the same one as on the 2007 XC? I think the mileage comparison isn't quite fair since the 2008 uses the new standards which are about 2-3 mpg less. Is the XC much worse than the V70? Is the '07 XC a better option than the '08 even if mpg turns out to be the same?
          TIA

Yes, the Low Pressure Turbo mileage are from the 5 cyl engine. But the fuel milage chart was from the Volvo web site (specifications) and compared 2008 to 2008, not to 2007 standards.
The 3.2 engine looks remarkably like the Audi/VW 3.2 engine, and gets the same milage as the A6 wagon.

    Hi,
I can`t really offer much in the way of advice on the 07 or 08 XC but after many years of 240`s & later an 850 wagon(great car!!)we bought an 04 XC70 last summer.
I, too, felt that it was a little "floaty" but have since gotten used to it. I have to say that after spending 30+ years driving 544`s, 122s & 240`s that had that "road-hugging" feel the new ones are just "different".
That said, my wife LOVES the XC & I have to admit that it`s pretty nice. Best looking wagon on the road!
RE: Subaru. I drove a friend`s Outback for a few days & was not impressed. The build quality just didn`t seem to be up to standard, Volvo, that is.
    Good luck!
    Rich

Son-in-law has a xc90 (06). We put IPD sways on it and it is much improved. That may be the answer to some of the "float" you speak of.
