timing belt/tensioner question 850 1997

Last week I went to the dealer for a timing belt change on my 97 N/A 5sp with 140k on the odometer. I specifically asked for the timing belt and tensioner to be replaced as many seem to recommend the tensioner be replaced every other tbelt change. When I returned to pick up the car, the invoice came out lower than expected (a big surprise). When I asked the service advisor why the invoice was cheaper, he said that it had a hydraulic tensioner that didn't need to be replaced. Given that some have mentioned the possibility of the tensioner going bad and subsequently taking out their engines, should I be concerned? Should I go back to the dealer and ask them to replace the tensioner as agreed?
They did state on the invoice that no tensioner was needed at the time of the repair, so would this cover me in case it did fail?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

    timing belt/tensioner question 850 1997

    Hi,
have twice tb on two 850/94s at 120kkm and again at 240kkm, first the belt only then all belt, idler and tensioner pulleys for peace of mind. couldn't find anything doubtful in bearings however, but feel good having them renewed.
But isn't there a difference between the long lasting hydraulic tensioner and the later mechanical one being less thrustworthy?

What the hell are they playing at? Just done mine at 160K and it was totally siezed, not sure how i had got away with it! A family member had the same a couple of years back. 2 weeks after the belt change the tensioner failed and the belt slipped. £1300 UK pounds damage to a V70 D5!

I would get them to replace it. You specifically asked for it, and they didn't replace it. Makes no sense. Will you ever stop thinking about it until 210,000 miles? I wouldn't.

Ask them if they want to accept responsibility for it and the repairs if it fails in the next 70,000 miles. In writing!

While you did ask to have the tensioner replaced and they did not do it the real problem does not lie in the hydraulic tensioner itself. The hydro tensioners are only to be replaced when they show signs of leakage. However, the tensioner and idler pullies are what take a dump on you in that system. We started using the hydro tensioners on the late model 16 valve motors and have not really had a problem with them but the mechanical tensioners that incorporate the pulley and bearing do go bad as well as the near identical pulley/bearing set up of the idler pulley. It is for this reason that I replace the tensioner and idler pullies every other time on every car that I do. While the mechanic that worked on your car probably doesn't see a dime of parts profit you would think that the service advisor would make sure that it got done if the customer requested seeing as how he probably does get paid off of the bottom line. While I guess you could go back and pitch a bitch and get your tensioner installed, you really want to replace the other two pullies to achieve what you are looking for.

        slightly off topic 850 1997

Hi Mark. Question: I have a '95 850 Turbo with 185K miles, belt changed on time at 140K. However, no tensioner or pully replacement. I think the water pump was replaced around 98K.

The question I have is, would you suggest replacing the tensioner, pullies and belt prior to 210K (since the tensioner and pullies are the original)? Thanks, Don

Although it is a pain in the ass, if it were my vehicle I would go back in and replace those two pullies. Chances are pretty good that you will make it to 210 without it exploding but it is not worth the gamble in my opinion. Often times when the pulley bearings start to go away they will let you know with a howling noise when started cold that will typically go away after just a few minutes of driving but this is not always the case.
