Quest about 94 854, 129k mi, needs t-belt 850 1994

Is it possible for the belt to break and not incur any valve damage. Found a 94 854 n/a today w/129k. Tried to start it and you can hear the ohc is not operating . Car is super clean in side and out, I was told I could have it for $500. It's at a donation outlet. This 850 is really a beauty, just wondering if I should go for it or pass..... You may need to drop some bucks into it to get it going, such as a minimum of a head job, including valves. This does give you a good chance to take care of the flame trap and the complete belt system. You can do it if you want to learn about the white engine. If it was here I would probably go for it, but my wife would probably kill me.

Good luch with your decision,

dick

No, they are benders and you had better count on it having bent every single valve. Customer pay on a job like that usually ends up somewhere between 2.5-3.0K depending upon the amount of extra work that is done like major services, breather boxes etc. If you do not have the special tools to work on that head I would recommend waving off on it. If you decide to go for it I suggest two things, 1) call your local wrecking yard and see how much they are willing to give for it so you have a guide line for what it is really worth, and 2) offer them $250.00 or so to start with. The car probably does not book out at much more than 3K or so and you are going to have to sink that much back into it to make a runner out of it. Remember it is a donation center so you know exactly what they paid for the thing.

I keep admiring the 850-s70 cars but keep wrestling with the complexity of them, guess I better stick with my trusty 2.3 2 7 and 940's. I buy and sell them on the side and I've been driving my 91 745ti for just over 3 yrs now, bought from orig owner w/239, now about to turn 267k. Just had to replace the in tank pump last week, first real prob with it. Have sold probably 10 others in the last 3 yrs. People say why not keep what I'm selling and let the turbo go, I just love that 745t and envision me driving it till it drops. Just seems to run better every day... Thanks folks for your opinions..
