Losing coolant 850 1994

Radiator and hoses are dry
oil isn't foamy
interior floor is dry
do the 850's have soft plugs ?
How tough to change, and helpful hints appreciated.
Also, is there something else I should look for? thanks

I believe common wisdom is to go for an OEM water pump on the 850. Given the location (you don't want to go back there until the next timing belt replacement) and importance of the timing belt (ie interference damage on failure) it isn't worth skimping. Just an opinion. Good luck.

It's about the same as changing a timing belt - see volvospeed/bay13. Of course you will drain all the coolant first. I found I could loosen the 7 pump bolts pretty easily but I couldn't work the pump free until I removed the timing belt idler. It took a little patience to make sure the mounting surface on the engine block was really free of old gasket material. I used a pump from the Volvo dealer which came with new bolts (they were pretreated with some anti-seize or similar substance on the threads).

There may be aftermarket pumps that are ok. For a different car (a Ford, not a Volvo) I bought an aftermarket pump supplied by Bosch at half the OEM price - it was ok but not as substantial as the original one. I would usually choose the factory part for a car I planned to keep a long while.

I wouldn't want to second-guess you - are you sure it's not just the hose that runs behind there to the reservoir?

Sorry, forgot to add , 15 minutes after I got home tonight, I noticed a puddle of coolant under the back left side of the engine.

How quickly is the coolant being lost? If not especially fast -

Was the system opened recently - if so may have an air pocket which is being filled (when last refilled was it really full?)

Seepage around a loose clamp or fitting may be slow enough not to leave obvious signs.
